Hi all, welcome to my blog about recruitment, selection and retention. 

Let me start with a brief history of human resources management (HRM) and how it has evolved over time. 

The history of HRM can be traced back to the early 19th century when the Industrial Revolution led to a large increase in the size and complexity of organizations. As organizations grew, they began to need more formal systems for managing their employees.

One of the earliest forms of HRM was "welfare capitalism," which emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Welfare capitalism was a paternalistic approach to HRM that focused on providing employees with a range of social benefits, such as health insurance, pensions, and recreation facilities. The goal of welfare capitalism was to improve employee morale and productivity.

In the early 20th century, a new approach to HRM emerged, known as "scientific management." Scientific management was based on the work of Frederick Taylor, who argued that organizations could increase their productivity by scientifically studying work tasks and eliminating waste. Taylor's ideas led to the development of time-and-motion studies, which were used to break down work tasks into their smallest components and to identify the most efficient way to perform them.

In the mid-20th century, a new approach to HRM emerged, known as "human relations." Human relations were based on the work of Elton Mayo, who argued that the social environment of the workplace had a significant impact on employee productivity. Mayo's Hawthorne studies showed that employees were more productive when they felt that they were part of a team and that their work was valued.

Today, HRM is a broad and complex field that encompasses a wide range of activities, such as:

  • Recruitment and selection
  • Training and development
  • Compensation and benefits
  • Performance management
  • Employee relations
  • Health and safety
  • Diversity and inclusion

HRM plays a vital role in organizations of all sizes, it helps organizations to create a positive and productive work environment. It is also responsible for attracting, developing, and retaining the best employees.

    According to Schneider(1987) Organizations require effective recruiting and selection procedures to attract and retain outstanding individuals with the necessary skills, credentials, and traits. Talent acquisition, competitive advantage, workforce productivity, retention, employee happiness, innovation, creativity, cost efficiency, succession planning, flexibility to change, organizational culture, and legal and ethical compliance all result from this. Organizations can create innovation, creativity, cost effectiveness, succession planning, adaptation to change, and a cohesive and good work environment by carefully choosing individuals.

    The goal of recruitment is to generate a pool of qualified job applicants. It refers to the range of processes used to attract qualified individuals to encourage them to apply for jobs in the organization. The success of recruitment is dependent on many factors, including the attractiveness of the organization, the work climate and culture of the organization, managerial and supervisory attitudes and behavior, workload, and other job-related considerations.
    The idea of person-organization fit is very important, the extent to which an applicant’s values match the values and culture of the organization. A great many selection tools are available, including the job application form, standardized tests, personal interviews, simulations, and references.
    The success of a retention programme depends on the ability to identify the causes of employee turnover and address the relevant issues.

These biases are shaped by our experiences, upbringing and culture, and can influence our thoughts, feelings and behaviour towards others. The term 'mindbugs' was coined by the psychologist Mahzarin Banaji to describe the unconscious biases we have. Just like a piece of software, our brains have bugs in them that can sometimes cause us to behave in ways that we do not intend. These bugs are called unconscious bias, and they're part of everyone's brain. Unconscious biases are neither intentional nor voluntary. They are just the way our brains are wired. Our brains make connections between different pieces of information, and sometimes these connections are base
